What is nonwoven fabric?
Nonwoven fabric is an alternative to traditional woven fabric, made from natural and synthetic fibres or from synthetic fibres only. Nonwovens have a wide range of uses: from industrial and medical applications (insulating and interlining material, disposable clothing, underwear) to everyday use (tablecloths, cleaning wipes).
Several types of nonwoven fabric can be distinguished according to their composition and production method.
Spunlace
Spunlace is a nonwoven fabric consisting of natural and man-made fibres (viscose and polyester), manufactured using a water-jet (hydroentanglement) method. Spunlace technology emerged in the 1960s but was first officially introduced in 1973 by DuPont (Sontara).
The fibres of the material are interlaced under the impact of high-speed, high-pressure water jets. The web is tightly bonded by the water jets on a perforated drum, usually punched alternately from both sides, and may pass under the water jets a certain number of times depending on the required strength. In the final stage, the bonded web is dried in a special chamber at high temperature, which gives the material additional hygiene and cleanliness.
In our products we use white spunlace with a density of 40–55 g/m². The viscose content ranges from 40 to 70%. If the material is 100% viscose (a natural raw material), it becomes biodegradable. Spunlace is soft and pleasant to the touch, absorbs and retains moisture well and does not lose strength when wet. For certain products we use laminated spunlace, which has an additional layer of polyethylene film that prevents the penetration of liquids and bacteria.
Spunbond
Spunbond is a nonwoven fabric as well as the name of the technology for producing nonwoven fabric based on 100% polypropylene fibres (a synthetic fibre). Thanks to its synthetic origin, the material acquires water-repellent properties.
The polymer melt is extruded as thin continuous filaments that are drawn in an air stream and form a textile web on a moving conveyor; the filaments are then bonded by point thermal calendering.
In our products we use spunbond with a density of 15–40 g/m² in the following colours: white, blue, green, pink and yellow. For certain products we use laminated spunbond with an additional layer of polyethylene film that prevents the penetration of liquid and bacteria.
SMS and meltblown
SMS is a three-layer nonwoven fabric consisting of 100% polypropylene fibres. Its distinctive feature is a meltblown layer sandwiched between two spunbond layers. The material became widely known thanks to its use in the production of protective surgical masks.
Meltblown is a kind of polypropylene wadding with enhanced hydrophilic and barrier properties against the penetration of microorganisms; it absorbs liquid well and distributes it across the entire surface of the material. The inner hydrophilic layer quickly absorbs and lets liquid (such as sweat) pass through, while the outer hydrophobic layer prevents liquid from penetrating from the outside, creating a feeling of dryness. During production, long fibres are spun from molten polymers that are blown from nozzles onto a belt; the meltblown method produces very fine and light fibres that improve the filtration, acoustic properties and absorbency of the final product.
In our products we use SMS with a density of 20–40 g/m² in blue and white. The material is waterproof.
